Be Inspired, Be Motivated: Sekweha Career Fair
On October 28th, 2015, the Sekweha Youth Centre presented their first annual Career Fair at the Janvier Multiplex. Sekweha partnered with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Careers Next Generation, YMCA Wood Buffalo, Nexen, StatOil, Suncor and ConocoPhillips Canada.
The event began with a welcome from Chief Vern Janvier, who reminded the youth that everyone at the event was there for them, and they are the future leaders in the community of Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation. The Chief shared his personal experiences growing up in a family of ten, and overcoming personal hardships to become Chief and business owner.
Chief Vern was followed by motivational speaker Connie Landry from Nexen. Connie is from the Mohawk Nation in Ontario and shared her story of succeeding because of the mentors in her life and striving to accomplish more as she transitioned to new careers.
This was followed by Career Speed Dating, which is a timed event consisting of youth speaking to a number of career professionals to learn about career opportunities in the region. A total of 26 youth participated and learned about careers including hockey coach, chef, RCMP officer, fire and rescue, environmental, nursing, heavy equipment operator and transportation. The youth were asked to fill out their career passports, and identify careers with a green, yellow or red sticker to indicate their interest. The passports were entered into a prize draw, and the prizes included backpacks, iTunes gifts cards, iPods and an iPad mini.
Lunch was provided by SNC Lavalin, who prepared a delicious meal for everyone involved and community members. After lunch, the youth participated in a feedback and brainstorming session facilitated by Nikki Fitzpatrick of Suncor and Kelly Tobin of the YMCA. The youth gave their input on upcoming career-related workshops in the community, and let the organizers know which careers they would like to learn more about in the future.
The event was well attended by the entire community and a total of 26 youth participated throughout the day. Sekweha and all of its partners are looking forward to presenting more career workshops in 2016!
